Hey, I feel it goes without saying that sporting symbols such as a swastikas is highly offensive. You shouldn't wear or incorporate anything like it with few exceptions. However many people don't understand that The Rising Sun holds a similar negative historic background to many people. Whether or not you consider it entirely a hate symbol is up to your judgement of facts. The Imperial Japanese Navy committed numerous war crimes and oppressed many Asian nations before and during World War II. Many of these nations still hold this ever present in their minds.Nanking Massacre, AKA 'Rape of Nanking'Yet another piece of information to note is that the Imperial Navy used flags like this...War FlagRegular FlagWhile the current flag of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force looks like this...Maritime FlagThe Japan Ground Self-Defense Force even uses a flag that looks like this...Self-Defense Force FlagNow while only the first two flags have negative backgrounds most people can't tell the difference or still find it offensive. A interesting fact to note is that the rising sun is commonly seen as a sign of good luck and tradition in Japan. A popular example of the rising sun in streetwear is the infamous Japan Earthquake Relief Box Logo, a shirt which depicts the flag of the Maritime. This shirt itself does not mean to be offensive as it specifically reflects upon the 2011 Japanese disaster. Again it still doesn't mean people won't get offended by it.TL;DR There's many forms of the Rising Sun, some with negative backgrounds and others with positive. Either way they're usually seen as offensive in some Asian countries, as well as around the world. I'd be careful wearing anything like it. via /r/streetwear http://ift.tt/2mILE7a
