[DISCUSSION] For people who make/modify their own clothes just to rock, are their any tips that someone new to this should know?

So I have the feeling that I need a creative outlet, so I decided that I want to start making clothes just for me. Any tips I should know before I start, or should I just learn through trial and error? Also any inspo or instagram accounts of people who do this and create really sick pieces would be helpful, I have a few ideas but any inspiration is well appreciated.
